Stage One: The Story Often Arrives Before the Script

The decision about which story is worth the gamble is already made before anyone shouts «action» on a short drama set. Often, following a few hits backward brings you to a book at the start of the pipeline. Breaking the good short movies Ice, ReelShort’s 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child, is based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport. Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series that ReelShort debuted on November 1, 2025, is adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. A web novel and webtoon lie behind Quiet in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. A number of app owners also operate reading businesses, which keeps source material close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio builds the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. When there is no book to draw on, writers fall back on reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, family drama and identity reveals. Every scene must serve up a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds, so the script’s job is to condense a long drama story into scenes like that.

Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces

The format’s economics surface on screen at the casting stage. The same names keep appearing if you browse the cast lists for short series on IMDb. Noah Fearnley headlined ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and was back in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance tale about a former football star. Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, both on GoodShort in 2025, were headlined by Rosa Singerman, who played opposite Franky Cammarata in the latter. A series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, so a lead who arrives at the next title with a following from one app has a head start that counts for a lot. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a specific viewer in mind. DramaBox maintains a production team in Los Angeles.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days

TheWrap notes that a Western short drama generally costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. A similar picture emerges from Wikipedia’s overview of the format, which sets a seven- to ten-day shoot at $150,000 to $250,000 for 50 to 70 or more episodes. By simple arithmetic, shooting a 70-episode series in eight days means shooting close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day. Chinese producers selling overseas have reported leaner numbers still: Jiuzhou Culture put a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Jiuzhou also stated that 20 percent of the more than 600 titles it had made for overseas markets were original overseas productions, while about 80 percent were dubbed Chinese adaptations. Because dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Cutting to 60–100 Seconds

In the edit suite, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. Each episode is built around a question the next one promises to answer, since at that length it has room for a turn or two of plot. The house style is the cliffhanger: the mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next. Stack those segments together and a 70-episode series amounts to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, so the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Editors are, in other words, cutting video dramas for multiple screens at the same time.

Stage Five: Picking Where the Paywall Falls

The last creative decision is also a commercial one. According to TheWrap, the standard model leaves the first eight to ten episodes free. ReelShort’s own blog notes its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, while TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Beyond that point, episodes are unlocked with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. The same blog says one ad unlocks two premium episodes, so watching ads is another way to earn coins; another option is a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews. The price in your store may be different, since prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, so placement is the contentious part. Any coin generator or modded «unlimited coins» app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and better avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Generated Series

The newest stage of production eliminates the camera entirely. ReelShort’s live-action catalogue is now joined by animated motion comics. The Lost Heir, a 58-episode family saga, centers on Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as «Johnny» and finally exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape, and it lists no cast. Do not mix it up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares the name. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, so the app has gone furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it «AI slop».

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Enters the Line

Fox Entertainment is the plainest example of established studios taking notice. Fox turned into a shareholder in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, by taking an equity stake in October 2025. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. In January 2026, Holywater secured a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. Watching a network-scale producer commit to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

The Production Line at a Glance

Placed side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is arranged around the shoot, which is the fixed, expensive block. Casting leans on known faces, scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, and the edit is engineered around cliffhangers that lead into a paywall. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, although fans who search for a «reel short drama» usually are thinking of ReelShort titles. The typical time and cost at each stage are laid out in the table below, which uses only publicly reported figures. Instead of guessing, it says so where no reliable figure has been published.
